TRAINING FAQ’s
How do you do training? Because of the complexities and truly transformative nature of CET, the best way to learn CET is by having a Certified Master CET coach co-lead CET groups with you. We would come to your site to do initial training and group set up. After that, we would come every month to help co-lead the CET groups and for additional training. The other weeks’ co-leading of the CET groups, training and supervision will be done via internet video conferencing; we have considerable experience with this technology.
Why can’t I just buy a CET manual and do CET on my own? We do not sell our Manual and software unless it is part of our total dissemination package. CET is too challenging a treatment to be learned without a certified CET coach to train and mentor staff as they learn CET by running CET groups.
What am I getting for my CET training? You are getting a total dissemination-training program that has been field tested at sites ranging from a state hospital to mental health centers to free standing mental health agencies to a university based psychiatric out patient program. The CET dissemination program would be tailored to your specific organization. You will become part of a Community of Treatment that now numbers over 35 trained CET Coaches and Master Coaches. Most importantly you will get the ability to make a major difference in the lives of persons with schizophrenia and other cognitive disabilities
Can I talk with someone who has completed a CET training program? Yes, we would be glad to give you contact information for our dissemination partners.
The following are specific questions from several of our training partners:
1. What do you supply in the training materials? The most important training material is the expertise and experience of our certified CET coaches. We will supply our user friendly, well tested CET manual for each of the coaches; software that is used for cognitive exercises; access to our web-based dissemination partners only training program; access to our national CET Conferences; and linkages to other CET Coaches.
2. Are there any special requirements for the trainers? Please see characteristics of a coach (see Coaches page), I would suggest that they be individuals who: 1) are likely to be with your organization for the foreseeable future as you will be investing a lot of time and energy into their being trained 2) that they be able to bill for their services as widely as possible 3) individuals who can think outside of the box. CET requires people who are open to learning new things and changing the way they practice. 4) will have time in their schedule to learn CET.
3. How many people do you require to be trained? The first person to be identified is the professional staff person who will be the agency’s “CET Champion” or Lead CET Coach, that is the person who will be responsible for making sure CET happens. It is often one of the coaches but can also be an administrator. In any case, the CET Champion has to be someone whose concerns regarding the implementation of CET will be heard by the agency’s administration. As far as the number of CET coaches, we recommend four to six coaches so that you all will have a solid group of coaches for your organization.
4. How do we choose the group members? See web page on how to choose group members.
5. How much space is required? You will need a group meeting room that can comfortably hold 12 to 14 people (8 to 10 clients, 2 coaches, the certified CET coach and 1 or 2 visitors). This space can also be used to do the computer training either by having desktop computers in movable carts or laptops.
6. What equipment is required? You will need 5 to 7 computers; existing ones should be fine with Windows 98 and above. A white board will be needed for lectures and exercises. A way to hang posters for lecture notes and treatment plans is needed; we use large, permanently mounted clip hangers that are easily installed and inexpensive. A Polycom internet conferencing unit will be needed for internet training and supervision; we can help you in selecting one. We also highly recommend that you purchase one or two video cameras to record all the sessions; this helps in supervision, learning and are available for those clients who miss a session. And it is a great way to show before and after results to your funders and families.
7. Would you suggest coming to Cleveland for training in CET. If you can send anyone who is going to be a CET coach to Cleveland to see a CET group in action that would be great but not required. We can provide CET group videos as part of the training.
8. How do you do training? We would come to your site to do initial training and set up. After that, we would come every month to help co-lead the CET groups and for additional training. The other weeks’ co-leading of the groups and supervision will be done via internet video conferencing. In addition, our CET manual is very user friendly; we have additional training materials and video clips on our website for our dissemination partners and we have continuing education conferences on CET.
9. What is your estimate of the costs for us, startup and ongoing? As in any mental health treatment the biggest cost is staff time. We budget 8 to 10 hours per coach per week to cover running a CET group in the start-up phase. Once staff are trained in CET, the time could go down to 6 to 7 hours per week. This time includes running the group, seeing clients individually, training and supervision, and prep time for the group. The other costs are for office space, software and supplies, about 10% of the staff costs.
FUNDING FAQ’s
1. Will it be difficult for us to get Medicare approvals? We have had no problem billing for the groups and individuals sessions to Medicare and other 3rd party insurance. What are the numbers that this falls under? 90853 for group, 90804 or 90806 for individual. We also bill the clients $10 per session for the computer training. This serves two purposes, 1) to get the client to be more involved and 2) provides a small income stream for this non covered service.
2. Will Medicaid pay for CET? In Ohio and PA, Medicaid does pay for CET as group therapy or as case management services (CPST individual and group services). We are able and willing to work with you on your specific Medicaid issues. It could well become a significant income stream for your agency as it has at some of our sites.
3. Will billing for CET cover the on going costs of operating the CET program? Our experience has been that Medicaid, and to a lesser extent Medicare and other 3rd party payers, are able to cover the costs of CET and to generate a surplus.
4. Can you help me get funding for the training? Yes, we have helped our dissemination partners with applying for major foundation grants that cover the full cost of the training or to write contracts for state departments of mental health. Usually, you can also get funding for staff training time and expenses.
